DANNY SEEKS MORE SILVER

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

DELIRIOUS Danny Lennon last night declared his desire for more cup success with St Mirren after their historic victory in what he hailed as ‘the People’s Final’. The first-ever Saints boss to win the League Cup was outlining his hopes for the future, 24 hours after 15,000 jubilant fans welcomed their heroes back to Paisley following a thrilling 3-2 triumph over Hearts at Hampden. ‘To win a major trophy so early in my managerial career is terrific, but I hope this is just the start for myself and for St Mirren,’ said 43-year-old Lennon, who will hold talks with some of his stars about extending their stay at the club. ‘No manager in the world would get sick of what I experienced on Sunday. I’d love to get

back to Hampden again and have St Mirren regularly competing for cups. Bringing European football to Paisley is another longer-term goal. ‘It really was the People’s Final on Sunday. It was such a thrilling affair. ‘On the way to Hampden, you saw fans of both sides mixing and you could see how much it meant to the people of Paisley and Edinburgh. ‘Our kitman had lined our dressing room with messages of good luck from local schoolchildren and that rammed home that we were doing it for the community of Paisley as a whole. ‘To win was amazing. The whole day was just the stuff of dreams and every single memory will live with me forever. ‘From lifting the cup at Hampden in front of those wonderful fans, to the open-top bus tour of Paisley and arriving into a packed County Square. ‘And the after-match party in the hotel with our loved ones was terrific. ‘I wouldn’t change a single thing about the whole day — apart, perhaps, from the opening 20 minutes of the final when we weren’t at our best and went 1-0 down.’ Lennon’s phone was bleeping incessantly yesterday with congratulatory messages from fellow managers including Mick McCarthy and Malky MacKay.
