Cleese and the new star of Slimalot
JOHN Cleese and his wife Jennifer Wade got into the spirit of good old-fashioned 1920s glamour at a special screening of The Great Gatsby.
But in Miss Wade’s case, attention was on her figure rather than her outfit – as her draped satin gown swamped her remarkably slender frame.
Observers expressed surprise and concern at Miss Wade’s gaunt appearance.
The jewellery designer has always been slim but appears to have lost more weight in recent months.
Her 73-year-old husband, however, cut a brighter figure in an all-white ensemble and white brogues with distinctive brown toes.
The couple even colour coordinated, with his striped blue tie matching her dress.
The pair mingled with other celebrities, including Amber Le Bon and new mother Peaches Geldof, at the Cineworld in Haymarket on Wednesday.
The film had its European premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on the same night.
Miss Wade, 31 years Cleese’s junior and his fourth wife, married the actor last year on the Caribbean island of Mustique.
He divorced third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger in 2008. He is still friends with his first and second wives, Connie Booth and Barbara Trentham.
The divorces have cost him at least £15million but Cleese still had to be talked into signing a pre-nuptial agreement, as he didn’t think it was romantic.
