Sorry, Sam, not sure about those boots!

- By Nicole Mowbray

WHEN it comes to fashion, she rarely puts a foot out of line. But the latest addition to Samantha Cameron’s wardrobe may be a step in the wrong direction.

The Prime Minister’s wife showed off a pair of £80 black high-heeled ‘half calf’ boots yesterday.

Although the style has been a hit on the catwalk, Mrs Cameron’s decision to combine her boots with a knee-length dress rather than trousers left onlookers suggesting that she had slightly missed the mark.

The rest of her outfit, however, was more in keeping with her usual elegant look. She opted for a boxy navy jacket and fitted dress and carried a £595 putty-coloured bag from the Chameleon Collection by Smythson, where she is creative consultant.

As the name suggests, ‘half calf’ boots sit higher than ankle boots but fall some way short of the knee.

The boots have been identified in fashion circles as a key trend for the autumn and have appeared on the catwalk at shows by labels such as Chloe and Jason Wu – so perhaps style-conscious Mrs Cameron, 42, took a shine to them during London Fashion Week.

Her shoes, from high street chain Zara, also tick off another new season trend as the upper section is made from neoprene – a synthetic rubber used in wetsuits which has also proved popular on the catwalk recently.

Mrs Cameron wore the leather boots, which are still available from the store’s website, for yesterday’s school run – despite their wobble-worthy 3in heels.

She appears to have a taste for eye-catching footwear, running errands in London last month wearing a brightlycoloured pair of retro Nike Air Max trainers.

The £85 ‘Thea’ style, first released in 1987, is enjoying a resurgence and is a favourite among urban music stars such as Rihanna and Rita Ora.

Last week, Mrs Cameron won plaudits for the stylish £42 teal dress from Asos that she wore for her husband’s speech at the Conservative party conference in Manchester.

She accessorised the modest outfit with a belt by designer Emilia Wickstead that cost almost five times as much – alongside simple black high heels from Topshop.
