GIANTS WHO PAY A PITTANCE
GOOGLE: Like Facebook, it registers its sales in Ireland. Last year it paid £12million corporation tax despite sales from the UK hitting £3billion.
AMAZON: It claims it doesn’t have a presence in the UK, where it has 15,000 staff. Instead it says low-tax Luxembourg, which employs 500, is the real engine of the company. Last year it paid £2.4million in corporation tax despite sales of £4.3billion.
STARBUCKS: The coffee chain was accused of being ‘immoral’ for its labyrinthine structure that ensured it paid little tax in Britain. In 14 years of trading here it paid just £8.6million of tax despite sales of £3billion.
APPLE: Despite huge sales of products such as the iPhone and iPad, it paid no corporation tax last year. The year before it paid £10million tax after an estimated sales haul of £6billion.
