STRAIGHT TO THE POINT

-

insurers allows them to split claims for personal items over £150 — such as your suitcase — between overlapping policies.

For example, if a customer driving to the airport has a bag stolen from their car, the claim could be split between their home, motor and travel policies.

In this case, the claim was divvied up between your home and travel cover.

However, the Post Office says it is rare for premiums to rise as a result of this, so it is looking into your case. I’M APPROACHING my 75th birthday and wanted to renew my driving licence. I was sent an official looking letter which looked like it was from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority — and even had a Swansea address — directing me to a website. I filled in the form and paid a £25 fee.

However, I then received a letter from a firm telling me to check my details it had filled in on a standard DVLA form. Have I wasted my money?

J.C. Bridgend, Wales. I’M AFRAID so. Firms such as this simply charge you to send off forms you could easily complete and post yourself.

A DVLA spokesman says they would never point any customers in the direction of this firm. I’M FILLING in my form for the 2012-2013 tax year, and want to claim the 10 pc tax rate on my savings. Last year, it was £2,560. Is it the same as last year? I’m 63.

P.L., Coventry. YOU will pay only 10p tax on savings interest up to £2,710 for the 2012/13 tax year. (For the current financial year ending April 5, 2014, it’s a slightly higher £2,790 limit.)

Remember you can only claim if your earnings — income from employment or pensions— are below the tax- free personal allowance.

The 10 pc rate applies on the first £2,710 of interest above this amount — so you can claim back a maximum of £271.
