We’ll treat the family say f irst £100,000 Mail Lotto winners
THE minute Jean Davies learned she had won the Daily Mail’s first £100,000 Lottery prize, she knew what to do with the money – give much of it away.
Mrs Davies, 88, says she and her husband Jack are delighted to be able to help secure the futures of their four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The couple, who both worked for the ambulance service, have no need for a new house or a new car, and are not planning to take up any expensive hobbies, she said.
Instead, she enjoys spending her time doing crosswords and puzzles on her computer and iPad. Mr Davies, a 90-year-old D-Day veteran, is keen on bowls and likes to travel to France every summer to commemorate the Normandy landings.
She added: ‘We’re very lucky to have what we have and we’re even luckier to have had this extra to help the family.
‘We’re quite comfortable as we are. We don’t need a new car or new furniture or anything like that.
‘We’re happy. One of the grandchildren has just bought a flat and another one is flathunting, so this could be very useful for them.’
They scooped the Mail’s prize draw, run in collaboration with the National Lottery’s new Lotto game.
Despite playing the Lottery regularly the couple, from Swansea, who have a son and a daughter, have never won more than £10. Mrs Davies said: ‘When we were told we had won, we thought it was a hoax.
‘I was so shocked. I still can’t believe it. Once I’d told my f a mil y the phone was buzzing.’
She said her family was her priority, adding: ‘We’ve done all our travelling and cruises and that kind of thing. We’re at the stage where we’re happy at home.
‘The family will have a very good Christmas, and the grandchildren will find some extra money useful.
‘People keep telling us we should treat ourselves to something special, but we’re not sure what. Maybe we’ll freshen the house up a bit. I’ll probably upgrade my mobile phone.’
