That Christmas temping role could earn you a festive bonus

GET cracking now if you want a christmas job. a festive placement can boost your cV and may lead to a permanent position.

That’s what happened to Donna Melville, 48, who joined the John Lewis store in cheadle, Manchester, as a temp last christmas.

Now a sales assistant in womenswear, she says: ‘Joining at christmas meant the shop was really busy so I was able to get stuck in straight away and find out what working in retail is all about. I loved it.’ When a permanent position became available, she jumped at the chance. ‘Since then, I’ve continued to develop my skills and product knowledge through training. I’m hoping to take steps up the career ladder soon.

‘aside from the opportunit­ies for career progressio­n, being surrounded by lots of customers stocking up on decoration­s and hunting for gifts is a lovely way to get into the festive spirit.’

John Lewis is hiring more than 2,000 temporary sales assistants this christmas, plus call centre operators and distributi­on centre staff (see jlpjobs.com).

Most christmas jobs prioritise customer service skills, so highlight relevant experience on your cV.

Laura Whyte, personnel director at John Lewis, says: ‘We look for people who can provide excellent levels of customer service.’

Meanwhile, amazon is seeking more than 15,000 people for roles in its eight distributi­on centres nationwide and its customer service centre in Edinburgh.

catherine McDermott, director of operations at amazon.co.uk, says: ‘We expect many hundreds of these temporary associates to move into permanent positions.’
