Was Channel 4 right to axe John Mccririck?

-

LIKE him or not, John McCririck could never be described as boring. The current Channel 4 racing set-up is bland in comparison, with every detail being scrutinised and chewed over by robots. Oh, for the old days of light-hearted banter, rudeness and the occasional argument.

BoB WooDLAND, Poole, Dorset. CHaNNEl 4 racing editor Jamie aitchison says Mr McCririck’s style was out of step and unappealing to potential viewers, bringing a farcical tone to the programme. What about the other presenters running after the winning jockey with a mike on a stick?

B. McDoNALD, St Brelade, Jersey. JOHN McCRIRICK is the reason why I, and I suspect many thousands of others, stopped watching Channel 4 racing. He’s a sexist boor whose attempts at humour and outlandish dress make him look a buffoon. This gentleman, I believe, has ambitions to be known as a wit. As it has taken him 73 years to reach the halfway stage, I think he should call it quits and retire gracefully. Compared with the intelligent, stylish and impeccably mannered Clare Balding, his shortcomings are even more painfully exposed. Whatever the reason for Channel 4 terminating his contract, I say well done, it was long overdue. Not only is McCririck hard work to look at, he’s also strident on the ear and never considers that the watching public might be just a little tired of him. Go, Johnny, go.
