QUESTION
Is Native American speech in the 1951 film Across The Wide Missouri authentic? Further to the earlier answer, though many westerns featured made-up indian speech, the films of John Ford usually used authentic native americans as extras and featured accurate dialects.
Unfortunately, these were mainly navaho as he used tribesmen from a nearby reservation who didn’t speak the language of the tribes they were supposed to be playing. this l ed to hilarity at the reservation cinema when Ford’s pictures were shown, especially his l ast two westerns two Rode together and Cheyenne autumn.
aside from the audience shouting out whenever they recognised a friend or relative in the cast, they also loudly translated what the screen actors were actually saying as they would often have diverged from the script, making ribald observations about the undoubted physical attributes of actresses Carrol Baker and shirley Jones and some very unflattering remarks about Ford himself.
Ford, a man of considerable vanity, claimed to speak navaho, but this was clearly not the case.
Michael Kemp, Cheshunt, Herts.
