One of our aircraft is missing
IT was supposed to be an operation run with total military precision.
But it didn’t turn out that way when an RAF Typhoon went ‘missing’ en route to its new home at RAF Lossiemouth yesterday.
Twelve Typhoons of 6 Squadron were due to arrive at the Moray base – but plane spotters only counted ten in. Then one was spotted already on the Tarmac – leaving one still to be located.
It later transpired that the missing 1,321mph aircraft was stuck at RAF Leuchars in Fife with a mechanical problem.
After climbing out of his jet, Wing Commander Mike Baulkwill, Officer Commanding 6 Squadron, said: ‘One of the aircraft had a minor problem. This aircraft will tell you clearly when it’s not happy. It is being worked on and will probably fly up later today or perhaps on Monday.’
The squadron is moving from Leuchars to Lossiemouth to continue its role in the Quick Reaction Alert force, which provides aircraft and crew on high alert to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace.
