October 6, 1971 Born Kirkby, Lancashire. September 1, 1990 Debuts for Bolton Wanderers in a 1-0 defeat to Bradford City. Goes on to make 257 appearance­s and captains the side to the 1995 League Cup Final. July 10, 1996 Joins Celtic under the late Tommy Burns for a then club-record fee of £4million. May 9, 1998 Stubbs and his Celtic team-mates prevent Rangers making it a record 10-in-a-row Premier League wins by clinching the 1997-98 title. May 29, 1999 A routine drug test reveals Stubbs has testicular cancer. He completes a recovery and makes 33 appearance­s for the Hoops the following season, winning the League Cup. November 17, 2000 It emerges Stubbs’ cancer has returned. Lengthy treatment keeps him out of football for almost six months. May 6, 2001 Makes comeback from cancer as a half-time substitute against Hibs at Easter Road, scoring in a 5-2 win. Given warm ovation from home fans, something he later reveals he was touched by. July 5, 2001 Signs for boyhood heroes Everton under manager Walter Smith. Goes on to play 142 times for The Toffees. August 2, 2005 Joins Sunderland, reports later emerging that Everton had wanted to insert a ‘cancer clause’, allowing them to release him if the disease returned. January 20, 2006 Rejoins Everton, with manager David Moyes declaring Stubbs as ‘indispensa­ble’. January 31, 2008 Moves to Derby County on an 18-month deal and is relegated with the Rams just months later. August 20, 2008 A recurring knee injury forces Stubbs to retire from playing. September 23, 2008 Returns to Everton for a third spell, this time as coach. Takes over as reserve team manager shortly after. June 24, 2014 Moves into first-team management as he is confirmed as Hibernian’s eighth boss in a decade.
