Windsor debut for Mail colt
FIRST Class Mail, the two-yearold colt which will sport the colours of the Daily Mail and Mail Online this summer, is set for his eagerly awaited debut at Windsor on Saturday.
Trainer Mick Channon has earmarked a six-furlong maiden for the son of sire Winker Watson, who has been delighting his handler at home recently.
‘First Class Mail is in good nick and going the right way so I’m very pleased with him,’ reported Channon. ‘We have got to start somewhere and I think he could run a nice race on Saturday. I reckon he’s capable of winning a maiden certainly.’
Whatever First Class Mail manages to achieve at the weekend, Channon believes he will improve as the campaign goes on.
He explained: ‘In time, he might well improve for a step up in trip to seven furlongs and I believe Saturday’s race will bring him on markedly.
‘We won’t know how good the race will be until we see the final declarations, but I’m happy with our lad’s progress and it will be exciting to see how he gets on in a good race.
‘He is ready to go now and I hope he shows a bit more spark than the England football team anyway!’
Channon, the former England, Southampton and Manchester City striker, hit the bar at Ascot with the likes of Wee Jean, Malabar and Elidor at last week’s royal meeting and the last mentioned i s already being targeted at Europe’s richest handicap at York.
‘I was really pleased with how the team ran at Ascot,’ explained Channon, ‘and we’ve got the Ebor Handicap at York in mind for Elidor as he wants to step up in trip now.’
