‘Tartan terrorist’ threat at campaign HQ

- Daily Mail Reporter

POLICE are hunting a man who claimed to be from the Scottish National Liberation Army and threatened to firebomb a Better Together campaign HQ.

Workers said the man entered the regional offices in Cumbernauld and issued an ‘ultimatum’ to vacate the building within 24 hours.

The Scottish National Liberation Army (SNLA), nicknamed the Tartan Terrorists, has been responsible for letter bomb campaigns aimed at high-profile targets such as Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, Cherie Blair and Alex Salmond.

A Better Together insider said: ‘There have been a few drunks and loudmouths who have barged into our offices to spout their views but this was completely different.

‘The man delivered his message in such a matter-of-fact way, the staff felt he was extremely serious. There was no shouting or swearing. He remained very calm and walked out of the door after issuing his ultimatum. It only lasted a few seconds.’

Local Labour MP Gregg McClymont said: ‘There is no place for this kind of behaviour.’

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Police are continuing inquiries following a report of a man entering the Better Together campaign office in Cumbernauld shopping centre around 10.45am on Wednesday and verbally threatening staff.’ Adam Busby, a former soldier, founded the cell of so-called ‘freedom fighters’ known as the SNLA in the 1980s to resist ‘mass English migration’.

In 1983, there were 27 SNLA attacks, including letter-bombs to Margaret Thatcher and the Princess of Wales.

In 2009, Busby’s son, Adam junior, was jailed after targeting Alex Salmond and English-born Lib Dem MSP Mike Rumbles as part of a postal hate campaign.
