DEILA OFFERS WATT CHANCE FOR REDEMPTION

- By MARK WILSON

RONNY DEILA has urged Tony Watt to make the most of a second chance at Celtic. The Parkhead manager was keen on signing Watt (left) on loan for Stromsgodset during the spring transfer window in Norway, but was unable to finalise a deal. Watt had already been farmed out to Belgian club Lierse last season, scoring nine times. But his application was publicly criticised by their manager, Stanley Menzo, who demoted the striker to the club’s B squad amid a fractious relationship. The 20-year-old — who famously scored in Celtic’s Champions League win over Barcelona in 2012 — is now back in the Parkhead fold under Deila. He sat out the 3-1 victory over FK Krasnodar that opened their Austrian tour on Thursday, but is poised to feature against Rapid Vienna tomorrow night. ‘Tony was on our radar at Stromsgodset in the last few days of the window,’ revealed Deila. ‘We were supposed to be getting another player, but it didn’t happen. Then the window closed and we had nothing. ‘Does Tony need to play games? Yes, but it’s about being prepared every day and what you do on the pitch, in training — showing your best. Everything is about attitude. ‘I don’t give away minutes, you have to earn the right to get the minutes. Every player in pre-season will get minutes and then we will see.’ Asked about the past criticism of Watt’s attitude, Deila added: ‘He has to work on those things, he needs to develop. But it’s not about Tony, it’s about every player.’
