Japs to quit the danger cities

TOKYO WAR LORDS ALARMED

- Daily Mail Special Correspondent

ALL America today is waiting almost breathlessly for Tokyo’s fateful decision. Will the Japs defy the all- destroying atom bomb or will they throw in their hands before they are annihilated?

That is the question every American is asking while the experts study the effects of the bombing of Hiroshima. These will be disclosed tomorrow. That the devastating new weapon has profoundly shaken the Tokyo war lords is shown in Jap broadcasts. Tokyo radio has been warning civilians to leave the big cities which are threatened by obliterating new attacks.

Promises were held out that a defence against the ‘A-bomb’ would be found soon. But the people were urged to get out, leaving only essential workers to carry on. Orders were given to strengthen the air raid precautions system ‘until measures to cope with the new weapon are announced’.

The Jap radio said the governors of five provinces were called to see the Premier, Admiral Suzuki.

This followed an urgent meeting of the full Jap Cabinet. Not until the reports on the Hiroshima raid have been studied exhaustively will the U.S. decide on future action. So Tokyo has a few days to make up its mind.

If the answer is ‘No’, the American and British air fleets in the Pacific will unleash the great test air raids in history on Japan’s cities. Enough bombs to wipe out a dozen cities in one raid are waiting in the Allied a Pacific bases.
