Andy’s disappointment over his own Yes tweet

-

ANDY Murray said yesterday he was ‘disappointed’ by his tweet in support of independence sent only hours before the polls opened last Thursday.

The tennis star was abused on the Twitter social media website after he said he had been ‘swayed’ by the No campaign’s negativity and told followers: ‘Let’s do this!’

Until almost the last minute, Murray had decided not to voice his opinion on the referendum.

Now the sportsman said he ‘trusts’ Scots have made the right decision and wants everyone to ‘move on’.

Currently playing in the Shenzhen Open in China, the player said it was ‘amazing’ to see so many people turn out to vote. Asked if he had any regrets about sending the tweet, Murray, pictured, told the BBC: ‘I don’t regret giving an opinion. I think everyone should be allowed that.

‘The way I did it, yeah, it wasn’t something I would do again.

‘I think it was a very emotional day for a lot of Scottish people and the whole country and the whole of the UK, it was a big day. ‘The way it was worded, the way I sent it, that’s not really in my character and I don’t normally do stuff like that.’

When asked what his tweet actually meant, Murray replied: ‘I don’t want to go into too much detail about it. ‘It’s been obviously a hard few days for me. From my side, I just want to move on from it, and hope everyone can.’
