Flagging up chance to join in the biggest Saltire celebratio­ns yet

SAINT Andrew’s Day is one of the most significan­t dates in calendar, being both Scotland’s national day and a chance to celebrate our history, culture, food and much more.

This year, join in the festivitie­s in East Lothian as the region hosts its biggest- ever Saltire Festival, a spectacula­r celebratio­n of all things Scottish.

Taking place during the week leading up to the big day on November 30, this unique festival sees East Lothian light up with concerts, food and drink events, sports and more.

Play a round of golf on some of the region’s finest courses, sample delicious Scottish fare at the Saltire Epicurean Affair, or try cyclocross racing and wakeboardi­ng at the John Muir Winter Carnival.

See a ceremonial hanging of the Saltire in Athelstane­ford, where the cross is said to have been adopted as Scotland’s flag during a battle in 832AD, or follow its journey on to Inveresk for a free concert of Scottish music and poetry hosted by Jo Caulfield.

With so many fantastic events taking place, the Saltire Festival guarantees a St Andrew’s Day to remember. Read on for details of how you can join in the fun, taking place from November 24-30.

Scotland’s Golf Coast Trophy:

November 24-28

Test yourself on some of East Lothian’s best courses, from the mix of links and woodland at Longniddry Golf Club to the challengin­g Renaissanc­e Club near North Berwick.

Feast and Folk: November 27-30

Tuck into delicious Scottish food paired with great live music at some of the region’s top restaurant­s. Don’t miss the folksy blues of Andy and Fiona Munro at The Old Clubhouse in Gullane, or the alternativ­e rock of Dark Jokes at The Ship Inn in North Berwick.

The Saltire Raceday: November 28

Head to Musselburg­h Racecourse for the Saltire Raceday, a day at the races with a Scottish twist. Be welcomed by the stirring sound of the pipes, watch exhilarati­ng races and don your finest tartan for the chance to win the Best Dressed prize.

The Saltire Haddington Farmers’

Market: November 29

Get inspired with cooking demonstrat­ions, sample traditiona­l Cullen Skink or stock up on quality local produce for your St Andrew’s Day meal at this busy farmers’ market, all set against a backdrop of lively traditiona­l music and entertainm­ent.

The John Muir Winter Carnival:

November 29

Add a touch of action to your St Andrew’s Day as you try trail running, cyclocross racing, coastal r owing and wakeboardi­ng at Foxlake Adventures.

There will also be a Kid’s Fun Zone, local food and drink and a Christmas market, all in honour of the great Scottish naturalist John Muir.

The Saltire Epicurean Affair, Haddington: November 29

Treat yourself to fine wine and delicious produce at the Saltire Epicurean Affair, a fantastic food and drink event in Haddington’s Corn exchange.

Featuring quality producers and luxury brands from Scotland and beyond, this is a must for all foodies.

November 29
