6 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ROBBIE KEANE...

-

Won first cap at 17

When he made his international debut aged 17 (against Czech Republic on March 25, 1998), Martin O’Neill was in charge of Leicester City, Gordon Strachan was manager of Coventry and Craig Brown was about to take Scotland to the World Cup finals. Rangers midfielder Lewis Macleod was three months short of his third birthday.

Morrissey is a relative

Keane is a second cousin (once removed) of pop star Morrissey. The former Smiths singer’s father is the cousin of Keane’s grandfather, Thomas Nolan, and the pair met when LA Galaxy played Club Tijuana last year.

Holds hat-trick record

His three goals in the space of 12 minutes during this season’s 7-0 win over Gibraltar was the fastest hat-trick ever scored in the history of the European Championships, beating the record set by Marco van Basten when Holland beat England 3-1 in 1988. It was his third treble for his country, having earlier achieved the feat against San Marino and the Faroe Islands.

Voted as a top Bhoy

Keane was on the losing side when Kilmarnock beat Celtic 1-0 at Rugby Park on his debut for the Hoops on February 2, 2010. However, the fans voted him as the club’s Player of the Year after he scored 16 goals in his remaining 18 games.

Man of many managers

Gordon Strachan, Marcello Lippi, David O’Leary, Glenn Hoddle, Rafa Benitez, Harry Redknapp and Avram Grant are among the bosses who have signed Keane. His combined transfer fees top £75million.

Euro bid will be his last

Even though he broke Niall Quinn’s Republic of Ireland record of 21 goals over a decade ago, the 34-year-old insists he will not retire from cap duty until the end of the Euro 2016 campaign.
