FLYING POLES TO THE FOUR

-

POLAND flexed their muscles in Group D l ast night with an impressive 4-0 victory against Georgia in Tbilisi.

In a match which looks certain to have ended the reign of the hosts’ manager Temuri Ketsbaia, the visitors ma d e the breakthrough at the start of the second half when Kamil Glik headed in from a corner.

Then came two goals in as many minutes from Grzegorz Krychowiak and Sebastian Mila which ended any hopes of a home comeback.

Arkadiusz Milik added a fourth in stoppage time, which appeared to back up the pre-match claim of Ketsbaia, appointed to the job in November 2009, that ‘Georgian football is dead’.

With the Poles having already conquered Germany, they now remain very much on course for booking a place in the finals in France.

The first goal, in 51 minutes, followed a corner from the left which was nodded back by Krychowiak and Glik headed it past Georgia midfielder Jaba Kankava on the line, who was after wards booked for an attempted handball.

With 20 minutes left, a deep free-kick from Maciej Rybus was flicked on by Glik towards the far post, where Krychowiak arrived to squeeze the ball home.

It was 3-0 when Slask Wroclaw midfielder Mila curled in a superb 25- yard effort after a sublime touch from Robert Lewandowski had killed the ball out on the right touchline.

Ajax forward Milik then swept the ball home in stoppage time after Lewandowski’s angled shot was blocked.

Germany were also in action in Scotland’s group, beating a gutsy Gibraltar 4-0 in Nuremberg.

Thomas Muller netted twice, with the other goals coming from Mario Gotze and an own goal by Yogan Santos, but the expected goal rush never materialised.
