A pay rise in tough times? Here’s how you can get one

PAY rises top the list of issues most of us find it difficult to talk about to our boss, say eight out of ten people surveyed by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

But asking for a raise paid off in more ways than just money for Harry Smith, from Slough, Berkshire.

‘In my previous job in logistics I f elt I needed a pay rise, so I researched the going rate and decided to approach my bosses,’ says Harry, 27.

He asked for a private meeting after work and broached the subject.

‘I said I did not want to cause trouble, but I showed them my research and just asked tactfully.

‘They reacted well and gave me a rise backdated for two months, a bonus at Christmas and two rises after that. Far from ruining the relationsh­ip, it enhanced it. After that I could talk to them about money more easily,’ says Harry.

‘They knew I loved the job, and the raise increased my motivation because I knew they valued me and my input. So, a potential source of conflict became a source of solidarity.’

Prepare evidence to back up your request before meeting your boss.

Kate Russell, managing director of Russell HR Consulting, says: ‘ Go with a list of things you have achieved for the company, cost savings you have made, increases in productivi­ty and quality of work you’ve brought about, projects achieved on time and within budget and ways you have contribute­d more than your job required.’

Mention any extra responsibi­lities you have taken on and suggest a pay i ncrease that i s reasonable and justifiabl­e.

Benchmark your salary on sites such as reed. co. uk. Those on minimum wage can check it is in line with latest figures at gov.uk. Clare Merrills, from HMRC, says: ‘About a third of employees on minimum wage do not check their pay slips. But everyone should, and if they think they are being paid below the minimum, tackle the issue.’
