FREE knitting pattern for a jumper like George’s

... with this easy-to-follow pullout knitting pattern

- by Jan Moir

the Christmas photographs of Prince George looking snug in his little soldier jumper have been a worldwide hit. In an overdose of festive cuteness, it was hard to know what to love most; the sweet toddler prince or his adorable knitted sweater.

No wonder that the £32 Cath Kidston top worn by the prince was a smash hit, selling out in shops and online almost instantly. Yet if you are one of those still clamouring for a bit of woolly military action, do not despair. Today we are publishing a free knitting pattern for a lovely jumper just like the one worn by George.

Called Changing Guards At Buckingham Palace, it was designed by vintage knitting expert Susan Crawford and published in her 2012 book, Coronation Knits. All the patterns in the book were inspired by the patriotic knits that became hugely popular in Britain around the time of the Coronation in 1953.

Susan, who has been knitting since she was four, specialises in sourcing, collecting and re-working vintage knitting patterns, which she stores in an archive.

her Changing Guards pattern is not difficult, with a basic shape and simple instructions. It would be a breeze for any intermediate knitter, with the only complication being the soldiers. If you get into difficulty, there is a tutorial on her website ( susancrawfordvintage.com) to help.

everything you need for the knit is available — with a discount (see below) — on the website of knitting suppliers Deramores ( deramores. com). There is no excuse. Get knitting!
