Now party hosts shell out for oysters

FORGET Twiglets or cheese and pineapple on a stick... the oyster is f ast becoming the party food of choice for hosts who want to surprise and indulge their guests.

Waitrose is reporting a 78 per cent increase in sales of fresh oysters this month compared to a year ago. It charges 79p for each.

It is also possible to buy them in tins or at budget chains such as Lidl where a pack of six fresh Pacific oysters costs £2.49 – less than 42p each.

Christmas sales of the delicacy – which is best served with chilled fizz – come second only to those in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, where its reputation as an aphrodisia­c is the key attraction.

Scientists say there may be some basis for this after finding that the shellfish are rich in rare amino acids that trigger increased levels of sex hormones.

Oysters are also rich in minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium and selenium as well as some vitamins, and they are a good source of omega-3.

They are undoubtedl­y something of an acquired taste, but do at least promise to provide a talking point at parties if only because of the differing opinions about how best to eat them.

Waitrose buyer Andy Boulton said: ‘Some insist on swallowing oysters in one, but oysters have a lovely texture and chewing them as you would a piece of meat releases the full flavour – but each to their own.

‘The juice from the shell complement­s their natural flavour and a touch of lemon juice or Tabasco can complete the experience.

‘One of the most appealing things about oysters for festive entertaini­ng is that they’re completely self-contained and selfserve which means they make the perfect starter or canapé.’
