Father dies after crash in hailstorm

-

A FATHER-of-two was killed after he lost control of his car during a hailstorm on Christmas Eve.

Richard Logg, 37, was travelling to visit relatives in Ayr with his wife and two young children when the tragedy happened on the M77, near Kilmarnock.

No other car was involved in the accident that left Mr Logg in a critical condition. He had to be cut free from his BMW.

His wife Lorraine, 34, suffered a fractured vertebrae and a punctured lung, but both children – Rory, three, and Thomas, aged five months – escaped serious injury.

Medics battled for two days to save Mr Logg’s life but he died on Boxing Day.

It is understood Mrs Logg is recovering at home in South Queensferry, West Lothian.

A flood of tributes have been paid to Mr Logg, a housekeeping manager at Fettes College, Edinburgh.

He was a keen rugby player and played for Edinburgh Northern RFC.

Family friend John Walsh, 36, said: ‘[Richard] had such a big heart and was such a great guy. He would have done anything for Lorraine and the two boys.’

Joe Smith, president of Edinburgh Northern RFC, described Mr Logg as ‘one of the nicest people you could wish to meet’.

Police Scotland said it was too early to confirm if the weather had played a critical part in the accident but it is understood the hailstorm had reduced visibility and created i cy conditions on the busy motorway.
