i See the Queen is urging us to ‘heal the rift’ created by the referendum. certainly, i’ll forget it if she does the decent thing in return and gets that ‘ii’ off of the end of her name.

Neither Great Britain, the united Kingdom or Scotland, for that matter, has ever had a monarch named elizabeth, so how can she possibly be styled as the second?

elizabeth Tudor was english and nothing else. indeed, it was on her death that the english succession failed and had to be replaced by the Scots under James Vi.

He quickly saw the way things were and sensibly amalgamated both crowns to create Great Britain, effectively putting an end to the individual monarchies by title and designation.

in 1707, england, along with Scotland, voluntarily gave up all rights to be independent nations when they amalgamated to create the united Kingdom, leaving them as simply member

states. Subsequently, to refer to Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as the second is not only wrong, it is insulting to Scotland and every country in the Commonwealth over which she reigns who have never had a monarch of that name.

So, if you mean what you say, Elizabeth, get your title corrected or keep out of things it would appear you do not understand.

JOHN COCKBURN, Forfar, Angus.
