ANDERSON HAS TO BE ALL WRIGHT ON THE NIGHT

- By DAVID KENT

PETER WRIGHT stormed through to the quarterfinals of the William Hill PDC World Championship yesterday — and set up a mouth-watering clash with fellow Scot Gary Anderson. ‘Snakebite’ was in devastating form as he saw off the challenge of England’s Andy Hamilton, sweeping the No 12 seed aside 4-0. Wright (pictured) averaged just over 102, threw five 180s and was also in decent form on the doubles as he checked out half of his 24 attempts to wrap up a comfortable win after just 45 minutes. Hamilton was not at the races from the start as he could muster just a 90.59 average in winning only four legs, with two missed doubles for the second set proving to almost be the end of his challenge even at that stage. Wright admitted: ‘Andy was a bit down on his usual form but you just have to keep on pushing and make sure you get the win and now I’m through and starting to play a bit better than earlier in the tournament.’ Anderson joined the No 5 seed — last year’s beaten finalist — in the last eight as he overcame a brave challenge from Spanish qualifier Cristo Reyes to go through 4-1. After getting through his preliminary-round match and then putting out Wes Newton and Kevin Painter, Reyes showed early signs of his biggest upset yet as he took the first set with a whopping 115 average and, although Anderson won the next three, it was far from one-way traffic. ‘I got the job done and that’s the main thing,’ said the Borderer afterwards. Raymond van Barneveld came out on top in the last- 16 battle of two previous world champions as he beat Adrian Lewis 4-3. ‘Jackpot’ had sent the fans wild as he completed a coveted nine-darter in the first set but still lost out. Phil Taylor squeezed through to the quarterfinals last night with a 4-3 win over Belgian Kim Huybrechts and he now faces Dutchman Vincent van der Voort, a 4-2 victor against Dean Winstanley.
