OUTER SPACE TO TOP GUN

-

Oscar-winning star anne Hathaway is about to win her wings. she will play a top-gun F16 pilot in a play.

The 32-year-old actress is in final negotiations to appear in a one-woman stage drama about a hotshot fighter pilot who takes part in airstrikes in the Middle East.

agreements are expected t o be completed next week regarding Hathaway appearing in george Brant’s striking monologue grounded at new York’s Public Theatre this spring. The production will be directed and designed by award-winning Julie Taymor — who directed the mammoth hit musical The Lion King, the less successful Broadway show spiderman, and an exciting version of a Midsummer night’s Dream.

grounded won a Fringe First award at the Edinburgh Festival and took off at notting Hill’s gate Theatre, where it enjoyed an extended run. That iteration has been touring the UK and heads to sheffield’s crucible next week.

in new York, grounded played a short run at a theatre downtown in Tribeca a year ago. The heart of the piece concerns the unnamed pilot’s fall to earth after she becomes pregnant. Once her baby’s born, she’s reassigned to a mind-numbing job, controlling Predator drones, with a joystick, from a trailer in a Us air Force base i n Las Vegas. The change takes an intolerable toll on her family life.

Hathaway and Taymor are also in talks about making a film version of Brant’s drone warfare drama. when i spoke to the actress in La she said she could not discuss whether or not she would be doing a play. However, i understand she’ll be in new York next week to work on final terms.

Hathaway and husband adam shulman worked together on a new independent film called song One, shown at last year’s sundance Film Festival. The picture, on which adam was a producer, is directed by Kate Barker-Froyland and centres on an archaeologist (anne) who embarks on a romance with a musician against a backdrop of family tragedy.

she was last seen on screen in the blockbuster interstellar.
