Young Sinatra, taking a selfie his way in 1938
STRIKING a mischievous pose in his bathroom mirror, did a young Frank Sinatra take the first ever celebrity selfie?
The picture of the 23-year-old, taken in 1938, is part of a selection of never- before- seen images set to go on display in a New York exhibition.
At the time, Sinatra was living in his hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey, and had only just started his singing career.
Photographs for The Sinatra Experience, which begins next month at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, were provided by the star’s family, record company archives and British photographer Terry O’Neill.
This year marks 100 years since Sinatra’s birth in 1915. He died in 1998, aged 82.
His granddaughter Amanda Erlinger said: ‘We have gone through thousands of images in my family’s collection, focusing mostly on images that people have never seen before.
‘My grandfather loved the art of photography and the public will see some of his early self- portraits for the first time. These images have been in our family for decades and we are honoured to share them.’
Peter Blachley, Morrison Hotel Gallery co-owner, said the exhibition will display ‘the private and public side of Frank Sinatra in a loving tribute’.
