A leg of lamb that is very tender

- By Oliver Norton

THIS lamb had plenty of bad luck to bleat about after his mother stood on his leg and broke it – just hours after he was born on Friday the 13th.

But now Claude, a three-week-old Valais Blacknose, is being nursed back to health with help from four-year-old Evie Duncan and her brother Bertie, two.

He is being bottle-fed by the pair since he had to be separated from his mother when his injured leg was put in a pink cast.

Evie, who lives at Whitehall Farm, near Dumfries, with her family, said: ‘I love Claude and really want to make him better, so I give him lots of cuddles.’ Her mother Emily, 37, who runs the farm with husband Henry, 3 , said that Claude had ‘quite a rough start’ in life, but was now ‘definitely the most pampered lamb pet ever’.

She explained: ‘We had to take him off his mother as he could not stand. It’s good Evie and Bertie are able to help feed him.

‘They go to the vet with him and watch when his cast is being changed. They take a keen interest.’
