Driver dies in smash 3 days after passing test

A TEENAGE driver who had passed his test only three days earlier was among four killed in a headon collision on a mountain road.

A-level student Rhodri Miller, 17, was in a convoy of at least six cars when he died alongside girlfriend Alesha O’Connor and best friend Corey Price, both 17.

The novice driver’s green Volkswagen Golf ploughed into a black Volkswagen Golf estate travelling in the opposite direction, killing its passenger, 68year-old Margaret Challis.

The teenagers, from Barry, South Wales, had been driving through the Brecon Beacons National Park at around 10.15pm on Friday when the collision happened. The accident occurred on

a twisting section of the A470 before it opens out on to a fast stretch where locals said racing among motorists has been known to take place.

Police yesterday bailed seven males, aged 17 and 18, who were all arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Rhodri and Corey died almost instantly. Alesha and Mrs Challis, from Merthyr Tydfil, died in hospital. Two other male passengers were taken to hospital, with one still seriously ill. The driver of the oncoming car is also fighting for his life in hospital.

Powys county councillor Liam Fitzpatric­k said the road was ‘notoriousl­y dangerous’, averaging four to five deaths a year.
