Greig’s joy at Rangers board fans ‘can trust’

- By MARK WILSON

RANGERS legend John Greig has given a glowing endorsement of Dave King’s takeover at Ibrox by insisting the new board will seek to help the club rather than themselves. Greig, voted the Greatest Ever Ranger by supporters, confirmed he is delighted to be King’s guest at tomorrow’s home clash with Queen of the South, which will be a symbolic moment for the fans. The mere presence of the 72-year-old, who has a 50year association with the club and won three Trebles as well as the European Cup Winners’ Cup in his extraordinary playing career, will further unify the Rangers support. And he insists they can trust the new regime to lead the club forward to challenging again for the major honours. ‘I got the phone call from Dave — who is a good friend of mine and I have known for quite a while — and I

was delighted to accept his offer,’ said Greig, who has only been to Ibrox twice since quitting as a director in October 2011 after being ostracised by Craig Whyte. ‘From the club’s point of view and the fans’ point of view, it’s great news, especially that they have a board they can trust — a board full of Rangers-orientated people. ‘They are there to help the club rather than help themselves. ‘I feel the same way all the supporters feel, the last four years have been so difficult. The supporters have been treated disgracefully and, if anything, I’m more pleased for them because now they can see some light at the end of the tunnel. ‘The reason these men are taking over the club is because they were fed up — like everyone else — seeing it being dragged further and further down. ‘They are supporters as well, so they want the club restored to the position it used to hold. It might take a wee while but they will get there eventually.’ Meanwhile, new Rangers director Douglas Park delivered a passionate rallying cry to fans — declaring that ousting the despised old board can be the first of many victories to follow. One of the Three Bears consortium, he will help fund the rebuilding process and is set to play a significant role in guiding the future direction of the club. Park paid tribute to the fans and insisted their collective power meant they should move on from feeling like ‘victims’ of the turmoil that has gripped Ibrox in recent years. ‘Now it is about the future and I believe we can all lift our heads and look forward with optimism,’ he said. ‘Even though we haven’t had time to assess fully what requires to be done, we are being asked to lay out our strategies for restoring Rangers to a prominent position — but our intentions will be revealed in the weeks ahead. Nothing will be hidden from sight. ‘The days of secrecy are over and, for the moment, questions about our plan for Rangers can be answered in one word: Victory. Victory however long and hard the road may be. ‘We should now discard this notion we are victims because the truth is we have not been defeated. ‘We are still here. We are still standing. We are still Rangers and let no one forget we have a long, long history of victory.’
