Takeaway murder bid thugs are locked up

-

A RACIST thug and his partner-incrime were behind bars last night after attempting to murder a Chinese takeaway shop owner.

Gary Reid and James Hogg stole Jie Yu’s delivery vehicle from outside his Edinburgh restaurant after he left the keys inside.

Mr Yu, 38, then chased after the pair on a bicycle. When he caught up with them he was repeatedly stabbed by both men.

He suffered a near-fatal neck injury and wounds to his chest, abdomen, legs and wrist in the assault in Edinburgh’s Pilton area on October 1, 2014.

Reid, 19, and Hogg, 24, both admitted attempted murder when they appeared at the High Court in Glasgow last month.

Reid, whose brother John was jailed in 2010 for the killing of Chinese takeaway driver Simon San in Edinburgh, admitted his behaviour was racially motivated.

Yesterday at the High Court in Aberdeen, Lord Burns jailed Hogg for eight years and three months and sent Reid to a young offenders institution for seven years.

The judge said: ‘You have both pled guilty to the most vicious and unprovoked attacks on a man who was simply attempting to recover his own property.

‘The whole episode is characterised by gratuitous violence on our streets, which will not be tolerated.’

Mr Yu is still recovering at home according to police. His wife Mae said: ‘I’m glad they’ll serve a jail sentence but maybe longer would have been better.’
