Kale, limes and avocado: Gwyn’s recipe for living on £19 a week

- From Daniel Bates in New York

GWYNETH Paltrow has been ridiculed after she tried to live on £19 a week to highlight the plight of the poor.

The actress – who is said to be worth £45million – took the food stamp challenge in the US which means she has the same weekly shopping budget as somebody on benefits.

But instead of buying enough basics to get her through seven days, she spent her cash on kale, seven limes and tortillas instead.

Miss Paltrow, who runs the luxury lifestyle website Goop, wrote on Twitter that she was taking the challenge and ‘walking in their (poor) shoes to see how far we get’.

Her critics however pointed out she has a ‘safety net of millions’ and asked why she didn’t just donate some of her money to charity instead. One wrote on Twitter: ‘Gwyneth Paltrow’s food stamp stunt is further proof that she has no one in her life to tell her when she’s being stupid.’

Miss Paltrow was asked take up the challenge by celebrity chef Mario Batali, who is a board member of the Food Bank for New York City.

According to the organisation, needy families are given $29 (£19) per person as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, after Congress cut food stamps twice since 2013.

Miss Paltrow’s choices, however, would barely last a few days. She bought a dozen eggs, a head of lettuce, dry black beans, frozen green peas, brown rice, corn tortillas, an ear of corn, some kale, a tomato, garlic, seven limes, a big clump of coriander, green onions, a hot pepper, a yellow onion, a sweet potato and an avocado.

On Twitter Zachary Ferguson wrote sarcastically: ‘Don’t Worry, Poor People: Gwyneth Paltrow Is Here to Show You How to GOOP Your Food- Stamp Benefits.’
