CHILD nutrition guru Annabel Karmel has been challenged over her new range of ready meals – after analysis found some have added preservatives and sweeteners.

T he best- s el l i ng author ( pictured), who was made an MBE for her work, is known for her healthy ready meals which are marketed as ‘just like you’d make at home’. But one of the meals in her latest range, which includes new and reformulated products, contains 70 per cent of a young child’s daily salt intake.

Another product, Tasty Spaghetti and Meatballs has also been reformulated and contains the raising agent E503. The new Lovely Beef Lasagne has added glucose syrup and agave syrup.

Karmel defended the meals, telling the Sunday Times: ‘I learnt that not all additives are bad.’ She said the Oriental Pork Meatballs – which contain the high salt – would be replaced with a lower salt version.
