Perks of DPP who let Janner go free
IT IS not just the £200,000 salary that Alison Saunders will miss if she gives in to pressure and resigns as Director of Public Prosecutions, but all the perks that go with the job.
The barrister, under fire over failing to prosecute Labour peer Greville Janner for alleged child abuse, enjoyed l uxury hotels, dinners, fine wine and flowers over the past year.
According to the Register of Gifts and Hospitality, Saunders spent five nights in Dubai, where she was a guest speaker at a conference. Besides receiving a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which she gave to charity, she had her hotel paid for.
Her staff stated the value as ‘unknown’, but a quick look at the venue, the fivestar Conrad Dubai, establishes that suites start at around £380 a night.
She also accepted medals ( value unknown) from Bahrain, whose regime has been accused of widespread human rights abuses.
Saunders was sent a £250 case of wine by barristers’ chambers No.1 Hare Court after she gave a speech. She declined it, but accepted a £25 bottle. Cheers.
