A fitting tribute to Clark the legend

-

THEY made their sporting heroes in the Boy’s Own mould back in the day. And none fitted that bill more aptly than the late, great Jim Clark. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his most glorious racing season, when he won his second Formula One World Championship and triumphed at the famous Indianapolis 500. There really was as no one like Clark (right), the he quiet, cool and sublimely skilledd Scot whose death at the age of 32 came as a shock even n in an era of all-too-frequentt fatalities. One of his contemporarieses famously remarked: rked: ‘If it could happen to him, what hope do the rest of us have?’ Frequently hailed as among the best-ever to lace up driving gloves, Clark’s legacy lives on in his home country — and especially in his native Borders, where plans are afoot to celebrate his life and achievements in this special year. The Jim Clark Weekend, a free event complete with exhibitions, a parade of classic cars and a guest appearance by Sir Jackie Stewart, among others, will be dominating Duns on May 16 and 17. Excellent stuff. Even if the famously shy hero probably would have been embarrassed by all the fuss.
