Hearts brotherhood could be dissolved after blitzing record

-

HEARTS’ fighting spirit was on show once again as they set a new league points record for the Scottish second tier. However, it remains to be seen whether their brotherhood risks coming unstuck in the Premiership next season. The runaway success of Robbie Neilson’s side has necessitated fresh goals since the title was secured — and overhauling the 89 points won by Hibs in 1998-99 was yet another ticked off with this victory. Callum Paterson cancelled out Colin Marshall’s opener in the first-half, but it was ironic that Brad McKay netted the decisive penalty in injury-time, given he was probably making his last start before moving on to join St Johnstone. Club captain Danny Wilson, Adam Eckersley and Genero Zeefuik are also on their way out, while Jamie Walker will be the subject of summer transfer bids. James Keatings was afforded the kind of reception that suggests his zestful style and crucial goals have earned him a place in the fans’ hearts. What is not assured, however, is a place in the starting line-up and he could also leave after being told that Neilson will not stand in his way should he be offered a better deal elsewhere. ‘The gaffer says there will be competition for places and nobody is certain to start games,’ said the 23-year-old. ‘I want to go up to the next level and prove myself there. I’m going to fight for my place. ‘I’ve still got a year left on my contract and, unless anything else happens, I will play for Hearts.’ Defeat was cruel on Cowdenbeath but a draw would not have prevented a tense finish to their season this Saturday. Victory at bottom side Alloa will ensure their safety, although a draw may also be enough to avoid the play-offs if Livingston fail to beat Queen of the South. ‘It will be nervy,’ said goalkeeper Robbie Thomson. ‘It’s down to whoever handles the pressure best.’
