Taste of success for Tunnock’s in Scottish rich list

THEY stole the show at the Commonweal­th Games opening ceremony last year.

Now, Tunnock’s tea cakes have propelled their makers on to the list of Scotland’s 100 richest people.

Boyd Tunnock, 82, and his family have made the Sunday Times Scottish Rich List for the first time, with a fortune of £75million.

Those on the list have a combined wealth of £28.346billion – a 13 per cent increase from last year’s figure. Topping the table is the Grant-Gordon whisky family, worth £2.15billion.

It now requires a fortune of more than £75million to make the top 100, compared with only £68million last year and £12million in 1998, when the Scottish list was first published.

Mr Tunnock’s products are sold in 30 countries worldwide and saw a huge surge in sales after the Commonweal­th Games, when the opening ceremony featured dancers dressed as the family-favourite treats.

Also new to the list is Leonard Russell, 53, who has a fortune of £75million and is the third generation of his family to run West Lothianbas­ed Ian Macleod Distillers.

Edinburgh-born Sir Sean Connery, 84, and Patrick Burns, 46, of Dundee- based games firm 4J Studios, both have £80million. However, Dumfries-born Calvin Harris, the richest DJ in the world, does not appear on the list, despite more than doubling his wealth to £70million in a year.

Former Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler also failed to make the l i st, for the first ti me. While I rn- Bru maker Robin Barr, 77, made 28th place. His wealth has grown 13-fold since 1998 to £197million. In eighth place are Stagecoach founders Sir Brian Souter and Ann Gloag, with a joint fortune of £1.04billion.

Edinburgh-based JK Rowling has been officially named the wealthiest author in the UK, with a personal fortune of £580million. EL James, author of 50 Shades of Grey, whose father is Scottish, has £75million, putting her in the top four authors.
