Police capture fugitive robber

A VIOLENT prisoner who escaped from a high- security prison has been re-arrested, police said.

Armed robber Haroon Ahmed – serving time at HMP Dovegate in Staffordshire – walked out of the prison as visitors were leaving last week. It was reported Ahmed had fled to Marbella in Spain after he taunted police over the weekend.

But the 26-year-old was arrested yesterday in the Nottingham area and returned to custody.

Police had been searching for Ahmed, from Derby, since his escape from the privately run prison last Wednesday, where he was serving an indeterminate sentence for robbery. His brother, Majeed Ahmed, 25, of Derby, has been charged with assisting a prisoner in escaping from prison.
