Canaletto back in the frame for Derby glory

- By MARCUS TOWNEND

Giovanni Canaletto has moved firmly back into the investec Derby picture after aidan o’Brien-trained stablemates Gleneagles and Found were ruled out yesterday.

Defeat in t he Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh last month had seemed to dent Giovanni Canaletto’s hopes of epsom glory on Saturday.

But the brother of 2013 Derby winner Ruler of the World will line up alongside Chester vase winner Hans Holbein and lingfield trial winner Kilimanjaro as the trio bid to give o’Brien a fourth consecutive Derby win.

o’Brien (right) won the 2010 Gallinule with Jan vermeer, who went on to finish fourth to Workforce at epsom.

Kevin Buckley, UK spokesman for the colt’s Coolmore Stud owners, said: ‘ it was dependant on how Giovanni Canaletto came out of the Gallinule but he has come out of it well. it is a bit tight but we took that route with Jan vermeer.’

William Hill trimmed Giovanni Canaletto’s odds to 12-1 and further market moves surrounding the o’Brien trio are likely when jockey Ryan Moore picks his ride.

the ‘will he-won’t he run’ issue surrounding the english and irish 2,000 Guineas winner Gleneagles ended when he did not appear among the 15 declarations at the penultimate forfeit stage. He heads for the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal ascot on June 16.

He will be j oined at ascot by irish 1,000 Guineas runner- up Found, who goes for the Coronation Stakes. She had been a possible Derby supplementary entry or runner in Fri day’ s oaks. Buckley added: ‘Gleneagles could ultimately step up to a mile and a quar- ter but we will see how we get on at ascot.

‘the situation with Found was discussed at length. She has had two races in quick succession and it was felt better to give her more time and go to ascot.

‘We might have taken a different view if we did not have the oaks favourite.’ Coolmore’s oaks runners are headed by 1,000 Guineas winner legatissimo. they also include o’Brien’s Diamondsandrubies, Qualify, together Forever and possibly Wedding vow. as expected, John Gosden’s favouri t e Golden Horn and

irish- trained Success Days have been supplemented to the Derby at a cost of £75,000 each. their addition takes the value of this year’s race to £1.434million.

Sheik Fahad al thani will have three runners. andrea atzeni rides no 1 hope elm Park, with oisin Murphy on Rogue Runner. the Sheik’s former jockey Jamie Spencer rides Rocky Rider.

the entries include Storm the Stars and Best of times — first a nd second in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood last month.

ascot will be hoping to attract the Derby winner after increasing the prizemoney of the King George vi & Queen elizabeth Stakes on July 25 to £1.15m.
