‘Heartless’ Newcastle axe two stars in one brutal call

- CRAIG HOPE

NEWCASTLE UNITED have been labelled ‘heartless’ by supporters after the club kicked out both cancer survivor Jonas Gutierrez and long-serving Ryan Taylor in one telephone conversation. Argentine Gutierrez, who had twice beaten testicular cancer before scoring the goal which sealed Premier League survival, did not even have the courtesy of his own phone call to learn his seven seasons on Tyneside were over. Instead, soon-tobe-former head coach John Carver first rang Taylor to say he would not be getting a new contract — then asked him to pass his phone to Gutierrez to deliver the same message. The Argentinian midfielder said: ‘I didn’t expect to get offered a new contract but it’s not about that. ‘The more important thing is that they can pick up a phone and call me or call my agent and say: “Thank you for everything”.’
