Bomb-proof courage
IT’S CORRECT to criticise the over- the - top reaction of the authorities in dealing with unexploded bombs (letters). In the Seventies, when I served as a special constable, a suspected unexploded bomb was reported and I was instructed by the sergeant to go with him to deal with it.
at the scene, we agreed that the object was indeed an unexploded incendiary bomb and the sergeant told me to sit in the back of the car and hold the bomb securely.
he drove back to the police station, placed the bomb in a disused outbuilding, covered it with sand-bags and contacted the army bomb disposal unit. Job done.
