Hidden in your tear duct, a solution for sore eyes
A PLASTIC capsule the size of a grain of salt that’s put inside the tear duct is being tested as a treatment for dry eyes. The capsule, filled with an anti-inflammatory drug, is being tested on 40 patients in the U.S.
Though artificial tears can help ease dry eye symptoms such as redness and irritation, severe cases are treated with an anti- inflammatory, such as the steroid dexamethasone.
The new capsule is designed to provide a steady release of this drug over a month. The makers, Ocular Therapeutix, say this method means patients get a more consistent supply of the medication and reduces the need for eye drops, which need to be put in several times every day.
