ADAMS RELISHING NEW CHALLENGE

- STEPHEN McGOWAN

DEREK ADAMS insists he has nothing to prove to the Scottish clubs who looked elsewhere for new managers. The former Ross County boss was unveiled as the new manager of English League Two club Plymouth Argyle yesterday. The 39-year-old succeeds John Sheridan, who left the Pilgrims after a defeat to Wycombe in the League Two play-offs. Adams (right) was sacked by County after just four games of the SPFL season in August, was interviewed for the St Mirren job and linked to former club Motherwell before finding a way back on England’s south coast. Delighted to find a job in English football, however, he told Sportsmail: ‘I don’t feel I have a point to prove to anyone. I have already done that in Scotland. ‘I think it’s about moving to England now to embrace a new challenge. ‘That’s something I really envisage working well for me. ‘Most people would say nowadays English football is the place to be. ‘That’s just the way it is, but that’s not to take anything away from a lot of very good clubs in Scotland. I simply couldn’t turn this opportunity down. ‘Plymouth are a very professional club. The handling of the media conference was very slick and I have to get in now and assess the squad I have inherited. ‘We had a good season last year and finished in seventh position, so it’s all about building on that now and getting the players fit and ready for the season ahead. ‘There are only 12 players signed for next season right now. ‘So there is a bit of work to be done on the recruitment side but that is something I look forward to. ‘It will be a steady progression and we are looking to move forward as quickly as we possibly can.’
