WISH YOU WERE HERE?

- HARRIET SIME

IF YOU’RE looking for any sort of peace and quiet this summer, you might want to give Benidorm a wide berth.

With the British summer holidays now in full swing, thousands of holiday-makers were jam-packed on the resort’s beaches yesterday, seeking shade under multi- coloured umbrellas and leaving barely an inch of sand unclaimed.

This year, Spain’s beaches are even busier than normal as turmoil in Tunisia and Greece has persuaded more families to head for the Costas. Hundreds of thousands of Britons who had been planning to visit Tunisia have turned to Spain as a low-cost alternative after the Government advised against travel following the recent terror attack.

And the long-running debt crisis in Greece has seen a fall in late bookings there, with many tourists worrying they will not be able to withdraw money from cash machines. The result is that Spain has set a new record for tourism, with 29.2 million visitors in the six months to June.

With Spain having had its own troubles since the 2008 crash, the woes of Tunisia and Greece are finally giving it some good news.
