Is Apple Watch failing test of time?
IT was one of the most hyped gadgets in history. But now it seems that the Apple Watch may be an almighty flop.
Apple lost £40billion in value in just three minutes on Tuesday evening after it refused to say how many of the internet-connected devices it has sold.
The Californian technology company routinely publishes sales figures for its gadgets, including iPhones, iPads and MacBook laptops. But as it unveiled its quarterly results, it left the smartwatch off that list. Its silence has fuelled speculation that an embarrassingly small number have been sold.
Apple boss Tim Cook claimed they were keeping the sales figure a secret so they would not give ‘our competition insight on a product we’ve worked hard on’. But fans and investors were sceptical, interpreting the silence as a clear sign the watch has fallen short of Apple’s expectations and that the firm’s popularity may have passed its peak.
Independent analysts at Slice Intelligence claimed earlier this month that sales of the Apple Watch, which cost from £299, slumped 90 per cent in the three months after its launch, falling from 200,000 to 20,000 a day.
