FROM a can of ice-cold cola to half a tub of Haagen-Dazs ice cream, the calories in summer treats quickly add up.

But there is an easy and refreshing home-made alternativ­e that won’t pile on the pounds.

Why not try banana ‘ice cream’? Recommende­d by celebrity chefs from Jamie Oliver to Nigella Lawson, this new trend couldn’t be cooler. Simply put over-ripe, bruised bananas into the freezer, leave overnight and blend the next morning.

The consistenc­y is similar to shop-bought ice cream, and you can add chocolate and sweetener if you like. And it’s a great way to get your children to eat fruit.
