Mother’s hope for missing son after ‘sighting’ in football selfie

- By Bill Caven

A MOTHER whose son vanished nearly a year ago has been given fresh hope that he is still alive.

Jon Anderson Edwards disappeared without trace while he was working as a chef in Lagos, Portugal, last September.

A huge search was carried out for the 31-year-old from Arbroath, Angus, who failed to turn up for work after suffering head injuries in a fall.

His friends later discovered he had left his clothes, passport and phone in his apartment, sparking fears for his wellbeing.

But now mother Lesley Edwards believes she might have spotted her son among a group of Chelsea supporters in a selfie taken at a recent match.

Mrs Edwards, 54, thinks he was pictured in the crowd after being sent the image by a friend who spotted the man in the stand.

Last night she insisted that if it is not her son then it is his ‘absolute double’.

Mrs Edwards said: ‘We’ve had so many wrong sightings and different twists and turns but I saw that picture last night and said, “God that looks like John.”

‘My heart skipped a beat and I was up half the night. Even if we can find the information to discount it at least we can move on but if it’s not him it’s his absolute double.’

Having already travelled to the Algarve to search for him, she is now hoping that Chelsea fans might be able to help in this latest possible sighting.

Appealing to the club’s supporters, Mrs Edwards said: ‘We’ve been searching for Jon for almost a year now.

‘The search was really well publicised over in Portugal but we’ve never had any information. It’s a mystery. He went out on a Friday night and had a fall and said he’d been f eeling s i ck and dizzy afterwards.’

She added: ‘How he’d have got back into the country I don’t know as the Portuguese police still have his passport.’

Last night Police Scotland said it was still liaising with its counterparts in Portugal in the search for Jon.
