Sarko the same height as his model wife? Now that’s a tall story!

- From Peter Allen in Paris

AS President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy was frequently compared to Napoleon because of his shorter stature. But that gentle teasing was clearly midguided – at least, it was if this latest photo is to be believed.

The 60-year-old former premier has appeared on the front of Paris Match magazine apparently the same height as his wife, Italian model Carla Bruni.

Inside the publication, further pictures of the pair on holiday in Corsica reveal Mr Sarkozy looking statuesque next to his wife – who in reality is noticeably taller than him.

Mr Sarkozy is just 5ft 5in tall, while Miss Bruni is believed to be up to five inches taller.

The couple were mocked for the pictures across France yesterday, with news site Atlantico saying: ‘As usual, Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni have decided to spend their holidays on Photoshop.’

Numerous other media sites suggested the height of the Right-wing politician had been altered, and hinted that the body shape of Miss Bruni, 47, had also been tweaked.

While leading France, Mr Sarkozy – who lost the presidency in 2012 – was notoriously selfconscious about his height. Miss Bruni usually wore flat-soled shoes while out with her husband, and he was spotted giving himself a boost on numerous occasions.

During speeches in Normandy to commemorate the D-Day landings, he was seen using a footstool to deliver a speech alongside Gordon Brown and Barack Obama.

He was also caught out standing on tip toes as he posed with Miss Bruni, Mr Obama and his wife, Michelle.

Mr Sarkozy is currently dealing with a range of corruption enquiries relating to his time in office. However he believes he could become president again in 2017 as leader of the Republican party.
