Rush-hour misery for city’s rail commuters

- By Alan Simpson Scottish Business Editor

COMMUTERS face huge differences in the reliability of trains in Scotland.

New figures have revealed the most delayed train in the country is an evening rush-hour service across Glasgow, which is late more than half of the time.

Yet one morning rush- hour service out of Edinburgh is late only once every three months.

The figures have led to calls for an urgent upgrade of the rail network on the busiest routes.

Thousands of passengers using the Glasgow services are regularly delayed. Worst hit is the 4.22pm service from Cumbernauld to Dalmuir, which reached its destination more than five minutes late 58 per cent of the time in the past year.

By contrast, commuters on the 6.37am from Edinburgh Waverley

‘Majority are satisfied’

to Glenrothes are rarely held up – only once every three months.

ScotRail and Network Rail are both targeting cutting delays as a priority, particularly on the crosscity routes through Glasgow.

Overall, nine in ten ScotRail trains arrived within five minutes of their due time.

Robert Samson, passenger manager at watchdog Transport Focus said: ‘The majority of passengers tell us they are satisfied with their overall train service. However, there are still far too many services passengers can’t rely on.

‘Network Rail and ScotRail have to work better together and redouble their efforts to ensure good and consistent performance across Scotland.’
