MEDIC WATCH

HOW CHELSEA COPED WITHOUT DR EVA

-

CHELSEA’S new medical pairing of Dr Chris Hughes and physio Steven Hughes — no relation — have remained with Jose Mourinho in the dugout so far. Vincent Kompany chops down Diego Costa near the touchline and the Spain striker goes down clutching his ankle but gets up quickly. DITTO Cesc Fabregas after Fernandinho’s late challenge. THE Etihad erupts as Hughes and Hughes are called on to the pitch to treat Gary Cahill after he collides with his Asmir Begovic. ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning,’ sing the City fans, followed by a resounding chorus of ‘Eva’. After several minutes of treatment (above), the medical team lead Cahill to the touchline so they can stem the flow of blood from his nose. OH Dr Eva, where are you? Chelsea’s medical team finds itself overstretched as Fernandinho catches Costa in the head with an elbow which could well have earned a red card. Hughes and Hughes are unaware of the situation as they patch up Cahill with their backs to the action. Mourinho looks on impassively from the technical area. Branislav Ivanovic races over from a prone Costa to alert the medics on the touchline. Steven Hughes breaks away, leaving Dr Chris to treat Cahill. Too late — City’s docs are tending to Costa, who needs a bandage around his head. RAMIRES rolls around holding his ankle after Yaya Toure takes him out, but gets up rather sheepishly when Chelsea take the free-kick quickly. CAHILL needs running repairs on his nose by the touchline. The defender leaves the pitch at full time with some cotton wool sticking out of his left nostril. He isn’t the only Chelsea player left with a bloody nose.
